Raising Awareness of Peripheral Artery Disease

Raising Awareness of Peripheral Artery Disease

September 30, 2022 in News, Wound Clinic

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) develops when the arteries that supply blood throughout the body become completely or partially blocked. This blockage, caused by fatty plaque deposits that harden arteries, is called atherosclerosis and significantly reduces blood flow. PAD affects nearly 10 million people in the United States and increases the risk for hard-to-heal wounds and lower limb amputations.

RMC Wound Clinic Provider, Dana Whalen, ARNP, advises, “PAD is something that should not be taken lightly. Here at the RMC Wound Clinic we provide specialized wound care and non-invasive tests to help diagnose PAD.”

Risk factors for PAD include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, age above 65 years, heart disease, excessive weight, family history of PAD or arterial disease, and smoking. People who develop a wound and are at risk for PAD should call the RMC Wound Clinic. The specialized care by our team can reduce healing times, increase healing rates, and significantly lower amputation risks.
