Parenting Tips During the Holidays

Parenting Tips During the Holidays

November 24, 2025 in News, Parent Education & Support

The holidays are upon us, which means both wonderful moments and specific challenges, especially for parents. For children, the holidays are incredibly exciting, but the rush of new experiences, people, and unexpected events can also be overwhelming.

Regional Medical Center’s (RMC) Parents as Teachers (PAT) are sharing some useful tips for parents to use throughout the holiday season.

  1. Set the scene. Explain the day’s activities and expectations beforehand. Kids adjust better when they know what to expect and what’s expected of them.
  2. Incorporate code words. Use code words for children to use when they feel overwhelmed, need to use the restroom, or need a break. Code words help bypass embarrassment that a child may feel in front of crowds.
  3. Know your child’s temperament. Introverted kids may struggle more with large crowds and require a quiet space to reset. Extroverted kids may enjoy large crowds and struggle leaving when it’s time to go.
  4. Set your child up for success. Have age-appropriate expectations. If the holiday activity isn’t kid-friendly, come prepared with toys, snacks, etc. to keep them entertained.
  5. Encourage gratitude, but don’t force it. Take this opportunity to teach gratitude, but avoid demanding it, especially for young children. As children get older, the expectation for showing gratitude increases as well as their ability to express it.
  6. Avoid forced affection. Allowing children to choose whether to hug relatives is one simple way to teach consent. A high five or handshake is a suitable alternative.
  7. Don’t rush. Plan ahead to allow more time to get ready. Rushing to get out the door creates stress for everyone in the family.
