Gayle Wilhelm, Regional Medical Center Oncology Nurse, joins Above + Beyond Cancer, a Des-Moines-based nonprofit and 39 other cancer survivors, most of them from right here in Iowa, and caregivers on its first domestic transformational journey to the Colorado Rocky Mountains in August.

Trip participants are survivors of numerous forms of cancer, caregivers, and medical professionals. Everyone on the trek has agreed to work hard during an 8-week training program which will prepare their bodies, minds, and spirits for this experience.

“The training program is helping to prepare me physically and emotionally,” stated Gayle Wilhelm, Regional Medical Center Oncology Nurse. “I am excited to embark on this journey and nervous at the same time.”

Traveler’s will take a motor coach to their base camp. They will start each day with yoga and meditation led by Above + Beyond Cancer’s Health and Fitness Director Mary Van Heukelom. Then their strength will be tested as they tackle four days of challenging hikes in and around Rocky Mountain National Park. Evenings will consist of activities led by Above + Beyond Cancer’s Founder Dr. Richard Deming. To round out the journey, the group will go on a medical mission - spending a day connecting with other cancer survivors, caregivers, and medical staff at a Denver’s University of Colorado Hospital.

“At the Summit we will have a flag ceremony to memorialize cancer patients,” stated Gayle. “If you want a flag placed with the name of your loved one, I am more than happy to put it in my pack and trek it up to the Summit. Let’s fill my backpack full!”

“I was very honored and excited when I was accepted to be a caregiver on this journey where I get to summit a mountain along side a survivor on their recovery journey,” Gayle says. “I want to share what I learn with my patients at Regional Medical Center when I return to make their journey a little easier.”

To have a flag with your loved ones names memorialized at the Summit of the Rockies, send donations (any amount is appreciated) to Above + Beyond Cancer, 1915 Grand Ave, Des Moines, Iowa 50309. Please include the name of the person you want to memorialized and your honoree’s name (Gayle Wilhelm -so they know she will carry it).
