“Ursula” Joins RMC Surgery Team

January 14, 2022 in News, Surgical Services

Regional Medical Center (RMC) is very excited to welcome “Ursula” to the surgery team. Ursula is our new robotic surgery system. Due to the impact and relationship between the robot and our surgical staff, it seemed appropriate to give our robot a name.

Robotic surgery is something RMC is well versed in as we have been utilizing this technology since 2013. However, with technology always evolving it was time to invest in a new system. “This system allows surgeons like myself to have a clearer vision and superior technology for a minimally invasive approach,” shared Dr. Grace Wang.

Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive approach meaning, our surgeons work through small cuts in the skin about the size of your fingertip. Through these smaller openings our surgeons will use a camera and long/thin instruments that can move like a human wrist. “So for myself this allows me to perform complex tasks that would otherwise require open incision,” explained Dr. Wang. “This approach serves our patients at a higher level of care with quicker recovery times and return to daily life activities.”

A good way to think about it is that Ursula is a high-tech extension of your surgeon. Your surgeon is always in control. RMC is proud to provide robotic surgery for general and gynecology surgeries such as gallbladders, hernias, hysterectomies and possible colon resections. Over 2 million dollars was invested to add Ursula to our team. Donations to help offset the cost are always welcome.
