Please Don’t Kiss the Baby

As little ones are born into the world, it’s always an overwhelming joy of emotions. Everyone in the family is wanting to come meet the new addition. It’s important to remember that these newborns’ immune systems are not fully developed. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a respiratory virus that is most common in babies under 6 months of age.
RSV generally looks like the common cold or allergies in healthy adults. However, due to babies having weaker immune systems and smaller lungs - being exposed to the virus can mean serious and deadly outcomes.
This virus is spread through respiratory droplets. Kissing, sharing drinks or transferring things from mouth to mouth can transmit RSV. Please remember to wash your hands, cover your cough/sneeze, and stay home when you are sick.
“We know the excitement to kiss your newest family addition, however if you do not live in the same house as the baby, do not kiss them. This will give the new parents a peace of mind by protecting their newborn baby,” shares Angie Strum OB and Family Health Manager at Regional Medical Center.
