Protect Your Skin this Summer

Protect Your Skin this Summer

June 2, 2022 in News, Public Health

As the weather warms and our communities continue to be more active outside, it’s important to remind everyone to protect their skin! Recently, Delaware County Public Health (DCPH) was able to deliver individual bottles of sunscreen to county ballparks and swimming pools for public use.

“Last year we were able to donate sunscreen to our local pools, ball fields, and at the county fair. This donation was appreciated and needed for those specific places as they are hot spots where a large number of community members gather,” shared Krystle DeShaw, DCPH Supervisor. “All of us at Delaware County Public Health are happy and excited that we are able to provide sunscreen again for our community to promote and initiate sun safety during these fun summer events.”

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States but by using sunscreen, people can help protect themselves from this cancer. A common misconception is that if it’s cool and cloudy, you don’t need sunscreen protection. However, during those cool and sunny days UV rays are still present. It is the UV rays from the sun–not the temperature–that do the damage to your skin. Consider these sunscreen safety tips:

  • Check your sunscreen’s expiration date. Some ingredients do degrade over time.
  • Apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before going outside.
  • Reapply sunscreen often if you work outside, after swimming, or strenuous activity.
  • Cover all parts of your skin exposed to the sun–including your ears!
  • Choose sunscreen that protects against both UV-A and UV-B with a SPF of at least 15.

Individuals who have a family history of skin cancer, a large number of moles or unusual moles, fair skin, or tan indoors or outdoors are more likely to get skin cancer. If you have questions or concerns about any abnormal conditions of your skin or a mole, reach out to your healthcare provider or a dermatologist.
