RMC Parents as Teachers Shares Crucial Summer Swim Safety Reminders

June 12, 2026 in News, Parent Education & Support

As summer kicks into high gear, Regional Medical Center (RMC) Parents as Teachers (PAT) are urging families to prioritize safety around water. While swimming is a staple of summer fun, it also carries unavoidable risks.

To prevent water-related injuries and/or drownings at pools, splash pads, and natural bodies of water, RMC PAT recommends five essential safety steps:

  1. Learn Swim Skills: Enrolling your child in formal swimming lessons significantly reduces drowning risks. However, lessons do not replace the need for constant supervision.
  2. Supervise Closely: Designate a responsible adult to watch children closely. Supervisors must avoid distractions like phones, reading, and alcohol.
  3. Secure Backyard Pools: Install a four-foot, four-sided pool fence with self-latching gates to separate it from the house. Clear all toys from the pool area after use so children are not tempted to wander back into the pool.
  4. Wear Life Jackets: Children and weak swimmers should always wear life jackets around natural bodies of water and pools. Do not rely on inflatable toys or foam noodles.
  5. Learn CPR: In an emergency, your skills can save a life before paramedics arrive. The American Red Cross offers quick online and in-person certification courses.

RMC PAT encourages everyone to practice these safety habits so that our entire community can have a fun and safe summer in the water.
