Ways to Stay Healthy for Holidays During Flu & Respiratory Illness Season

December 2, 2025 in News, Public Health

As families prepare to gather for holiday celebrations, Delaware County Public Health (DCPH) is reminding the community of simple steps that can help protect against influenza, RSV and other respiratory illnesses.

Local and statewide data show an increase in influenza-like illnesses and respiratory infections as colder weather settles. As reported by Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS), Iowa had its first influenza related death reported for the season of 2025-26. Vulnerable populations – including young children, older adults, pregnant individuals and people with underlying health conditions – face a greater risk of severe illness.

“Holiday gatherings bring great joy, but they also bring a higher risk for flu and respiratory viruses,” said Krystle DeShaw, DCPH Administrator. “By following just a few precautions, we can help keep our community healthy and our healthcare system strong.”

DCPH encourages everyone to take the following actions as we approach the holiday season:

  • Get your flu shot and stay up-to-date on recommended vaccines.
  • Stay home when sick. Even mild symptoms can spread viruses to others.
  • Practice good hand hygiene. Wash hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes and avoid touching your face.
  • Improve air flow indoors. Open windows when possible or use air purifiers to reduce virus particles in the air.
  • Consider testing. COVID-19 and flu tests can help determine the right treatment and prevent further spread.
  • Take extra precautions around high-risk individuals. Wear a mask, gather in well-ventilated spaces and avoid contact if feeling unwell.

On behalf of DCPH, we wish our community a happy and healthy holiday season. These small, practical steps can protect the people we care about most.
