Delaware County Public Health Providing Free MMR Vaccines
October 27, 2026 in News, Public Health
Delaware County Public Health (DCPH) is providing free MMR vaccines (combination injection that protects against measles, mumps, and rubella) to all Delaware County residents. On October 10th, 2026, Iowa Health and Human Services (HHS) confirmed 40 cases of measles in Iowa. At this time, there are no confirmed cases of measles in Delaware County.
Measles is one of the most contagious infections known to exist, spreading through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes, followed by a rash that generally begins on the face and continues to spread across the body.
“Prevention is our strongest defense when dealing with a highly contagious virus like measles,” shared Krystle DeShaw, DCPH Administrator. “Taking a proactive approach today – whether that means verifying your vaccination records or reaching out to schedule an appointment – helps safeguard not just you and your family, but our entire community.”
Measles can lead to severe complications in children and adults, such as hospitalization, pneumonia, complications during pregnancy, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and even death.
Vaccination is the best form of protection and the community is encouraged to check their vaccine status, pay attention to current measles activity and to call their primary care provider before going to the hospital or clinic if they believe they have been exposed.
The free MMR vaccines are by appointment only and no insurance is required. To confirm MMR vaccine status or to schedule an appointment, call Delaware County Public Health at 563-927-7551.
