Recovery from a Cardiac Event
Your recovery program will be in phases to help you become healthier and stronger.
Phase I (inpatient)
- Education provided to you and your family about the heart disease process and risk factors associated with heart disease.
- You will begin a low-level exercise program at the bed-side to promote healing and prevent the negative effects of bed rest.
- Our team will educate you about medications you are taking and the activities you can do when you go home.
- During Phase I you learn to balance rest periods and activity.
Phase II (outpatient)
- Your rehab sessions will take place in the Bob Holtz Wellness Center. Patients typically attend Cardiac Rehab three times per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
- This phase helps to strengthen the cardiopulmonary system and skeletal muscles. An individualized treatment plan is set up for you. Your time will be spent with cardio and range of motion exercises to improve cardiovascular conditioning and flexibility. Weight training is incorporated to strengthen your upper extremities. You will wear a heart monitor during the exercise sessions to evaluate your heart’s tolerance of the workload placed upon it.
- Structured education classes are included in this phase. A dietitian will meet with you and your family to help with nutritional changes and goals. Stress management, meditation and life goals will be covered in our Heart & Soul classes led by a certified Health Coach.
Phase III (in your home)
- The final phase of Cardiac Rehab takes place in your home environment or by joining the Bob Holtz Wellness Center.
- This phase is focused on making exercise become a healthy habit for your daily life. You will work on attaining a desirable level of fitness comfortably tailored to meet your needs.
- Exercise is now a daily part of your life.
